Andy was brought up in Norfolk, UK and began playing Drums and Percussion at the age of eight. He attended Whymondham School and Norwich City College before moving to London to begin a career as a professional musician. He studied with James Blades, among others, and was a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Andy has over 30 years experience as a professional musician and freelance Drummer and Percussionist playing with some of the leading recording artists and Orchestras in the world for film, television, and recording sessions covering all genres of music as well as playing in the orchestra for many of London’s  West End Shows.

In 1986 he was appointed as a member of the Inner London Education Authority’s instrumental teaching panel, and a visiting teacher at Dulwich College, London.




In 1997 he was appointed as Head of Percussion for Bristol Arts and Music Service where he developed percussion teaching, teacher training and professional development to a wide range of educational settings.

In 2008 Andy was appointed as the Head of Bristol Arts and Music Service and the Director of the Bristol Centre for Music and the Arts.

As an Ethnomusicologist, Andy has travelled widely around the world especially in Africa, South America, South East Asia and India playing and learning about the music of different cultures and regularly lectures on world music’s.

Andy has had many articles published on world music topics in academic and professional journals and magazines and his books have been published on African Drumming, Indonesian Gamelan, Brazilian Samba, The Music of India and Composing with World Music.
